Community Fridge
The Community Fridge is part of a national network which aims to reduce food waste by giving away items that have been donated by local shops as well as excess produce from people’s gardens. Since RecyKillin’s began in March 2022, it has redistributed more than 14,000kg of food.
When possible, food is put into our outdoor larder so people can help themselves to fruit, vegetables, and bakery and packet items, and we also have a fridge and freezer inside the shop (please click here for shop opening hours) (add link back to Reuse Shop page). The recent donation of the freezer means we can now freeze appropriate produce (such as pre-prepared meals, soups, pizzas, etc) before it goes out of date, preventing even more food from being thrown away.
The concept of Community Fridges is to provide a space that brings people together to share food, meet up, learn new skills and prevent fresh food from going to waste. RecyKillin is planning on running cookery workshops this summer to help us make the most of donated food, so watch this space for announcements.
The Community Fridge is open to all - anyone can share or take food, including surplus from supermarkets, local food businesses, producers, households and gardens. There are more than 700 fridges across the UK (and counting).
